My grandmother Irene Forte Pollet taught me the Prayer to St. Michael when I was a little girl. I would pull her monkey grass for 25 cents a day, and she would teach me. She knew what every grandmother who has ever loved a child knows: that the world is a battlefield, and you need a warrior on your side.
St. Michael is that warrior. He is the commander of the armies of heaven, the one who cast Lucifer out, the one the Church calls upon when the battle is real. My son Cody's favorite saint. MawMaw Irene's prayer. And now — this card.
This beautifully laminated St. Michael the Archangel prayer card carries the most beloved prayer of protection in the Catholic tradition — the prayer Pope Leo XIII wrote after a vision, the prayer that has been prayed at the end of Mass for over a century, the prayer MawMaw Irene taught me in her yard.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness
and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Feast Day: September 29th (Michaelmas, shared with Sts. Gabriel and Raphael)
Who Is St. Michael? — The Warrior of Heaven
St. Michael is one of only three angels named in Scripture — alongside Gabriel and Raphael. His name in Hebrew means "Who is like God?" — the battle cry he shouted as he led the heavenly armies against Lucifer. In the Book of Revelation, it is Michael who defeats the dragon: "Michael and his angels fought against the dragon... and the great dragon was thrown down" (Rev. 12:7-9).
He appears throughout Scripture as God's warrior and messenger: in Daniel, as the protector of Israel; in Jude, disputing with the devil over the body of Moses; in Revelation, leading the final battle. He is venerated in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam — one of the few figures honored across all three Abrahamic faiths.
The short prayer on this card was written by Pope Leo XIII in 1884, after he reportedly had a vision of Satan boasting that he could destroy the Church. Leo immediately composed this prayer and ordered it said after every Low Mass — a practice that continued until the Second Vatican Council. Today it is experiencing a powerful revival, prayed by millions at the end of Mass, in homes, in cars, and in the hearts of those who know the battle is real.
A Personal Note from Shawn
I'm Shawn Kilgarlin — wife, mother of four, mental health clinician, and Life Coach. My grandmother Irene Forte Pollert taught me the Prayer to St. Michael when I was a little girl, pulling monkey grass in her yard for 25 cents a day. She knew that prayer was the most important thing she could give me. My son Cody chose St. Michael as his favorite saint — and I think MawMaw Irene would have loved that.
