Thérèse Martin entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux at 15, after personally petitioning Pope Leo XIII during a papal audience in Rome. She spent nine years in the convent, never traveling, never preaching, never performing public miracles. She scrubbed floors. She prayed. She smiled at the sisters who irritated her. She did small things with great love.

She called it the Little Way — the path of spiritual childhood, of radical trust in God, of finding holiness not in heroic deeds but in the ten thousand ordinary moments of every day. Her autobiography, Story of a Soul, written under obedience to her prioress, has never gone out of print and has been translated into over 60 languages.

She died on September 30, 1897. She was 24. She was canonized in 1925. She was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1997 — one of only four women ever to receive that title. Pope Pius X called her "the greatest saint of modern times."
