Our Lady of Atocha — also known as the Mother of the Holy Child of Atocha — is one of the most beloved Marian devotions in the Spanish and Latin American Catholic tradition. According to tradition, during the Moorish occupation of Spain, Christian prisoners were starving and their families were forbidden to bring them food. A mysterious child appeared, bringing food and water to the prisoners — and the food never ran out. The child was recognized as the Holy Child Jesus, sent by His Mother. Our Lady of Atocha became the patroness of prisoners, travelers, and those in desperate need.
