The Story of Padre Pio — The Saint Who Bore the Wounds of Christ

Francesco Forgione was born in 1887 in Pietrelcina, a small village in southern Italy. He entered the Capuchin Franciscan order at 15, was ordained a priest in 1910, and in 1918 received the stigmata — the five wounds of Christ — which he bore visibly for the next fifty years, until the day he died. He was the first stigmatized priest in Church history.

For those fifty years, Padre Pio heard confessions for up to sixteen hours a day. People came from around the world to confess to him — sometimes waiting weeks for their turn. He was known to read souls, to know sins that penitents had never spoken aloud, and to refuse absolution to those who were not truly repentant — only to have them return, broken and ready, days later.

The healings attributed to his intercession are staggering in number and documentation. He founded the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza — the Home for the Relief of Suffering — a hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo that today is one of the largest and most advanced medical centers in Italy.

He died on September 23, 1968. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002. His body rests in the crypt of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie in San Giovanni Rotondo, where over 8 million pilgrims visit each year — making it one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world.
