The Man Who Shared in the Passion

On September 20, 1918, while praying before a crucifix in the choir loft of the church at San Giovanni Rotondo, Padre Pio received the stigmata — the five wounds of Christ. He was 31 years old. He would bear those wounds for the next fifty years, until the morning of September 23, 1968, when he died — and the wounds closed without a trace.

In those fifty years, Padre Pio lost an estimated cup of blood per day from his wounds. He wore fingerless gloves to celebrate Mass and to greet the faithful, but he never hid what he carried. He offered his suffering explicitly as a participation in Christ's redemptive Passion — for the conversion of sinners, for the souls in purgatory, for the healing of the sick.

He was investigated by the Vatican multiple times — and each time, the investigations concluded that no natural explanation existed for his wounds, his gifts, or the healings attributed to him. Pope John Paul II, who had visited Padre Pio as a young priest and attributed his own recovery from illness to Pio's intercession, canonized him on June 16, 2002.
