Every shift, they put on the uniform and drive into whatever the night holds. They don't know what's waiting at the next call. They go anyway.

St. Michael has been the patron of law enforcement for as long as there have been those who stand between the innocent and the darkness. He is heaven's own officer — the one who cleared God's premises of the most dangerous criminal in history. And this prayer, written with a policeman's heart and a soldier's humor, asks him to watch over every officer who walks that thin blue line.

This beautifully laminated Police Officer's Prayer to St. Michael card is one of the most beloved and unique prayers in Catholic devotion — a prayer that speaks the language of law enforcement, written for the men and women who serve and protect.

Police Officer's Prayer to St. Michael

Heaven's glorious Commissioner of Police,
who once so neatly and successfully
cleared God's premises of all its undesirables,
look with kindly and professional eye
on your earthly force.

Give us cool heads, stout hearts,
and uncanny flair for investigation.
Make us the terror of burglars,
the friend of children and law-abiding citizens,
kind to strangers, polite to bores,
strict with law-breakers,
and impervious to temptation.

You know, St. Michael, from your own experience
with the devil, that the police officer's lot
is not always a happy one;
but your sense of duty that so pleased God,
your hard knocks that so surprised the enemy,
and your angelic self-control
give us inspiration.

And when we lay down our badge
and our burden,
escort us to a precinct of peace and joy,
where we may serve without fear
forever and ever.
Amen.

Feast Day: September 29th (Michaelmas)

Why St. Michael for Law Enforcement?

St. Michael is the original law enforcement officer — the one God sent to remove the most dangerous criminal in the universe from His presence. He is the commander of the armies of heaven, the enforcer of divine justice, the one who stands between order and chaos. Every police officer who pins on a badge is, in some sense, doing what Michael does: standing in the gap between the innocent and those who would harm them.

The International Conference of Police Chaplains and many law enforcement agencies across the United States formally recognize St. Michael as the patron of police. His feast day, September 29th, is celebrated in many departments with a special Mass or prayer service. The Blue Mass — celebrated in many dioceses for first responders — is often held near his feast day.

My grandmother Irene Forte Pollert taught me the Prayer to St. Michael when I was a little girl, pulling monkey grass in her yard for 25 cents a day. My son Cody chose St. Michael as his favorite saint. The warrior of heaven watches over those who protect others. ⚔️

A Personal Note from Shawn

I'm Shawn Kilgarlin — wife, mother of four, mental health clinician, and Life Coach. I have deep respect for the men and women who serve in law enforcement — who face trauma, danger, and moral complexity every single day. This card is for them, and for the families who wait at home. Every ShopCatholic card is part of my mission of giving, funding Christmas gifts for those in need through Holy Angels and serving those in addiction recovery. Thank you. 🙏⚔️

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is St. Michael the patron of police officers?
St. Michael is the patron of police because he is the ultimate enforcer of divine justice — the one who cast Lucifer and the rebel angels out of heaven, who stands between order and chaos, who protects the innocent and confronts evil directly. Law enforcement officers do the same work on earth. The International Conference of Police Chaplains formally recognizes his patronage, and many departments celebrate his feast day (September 29th) with a Blue Mass for first responders.

Can I order these in bulk for my police department, fire station, or first responder unit?
Absolutely! This is one of our most popular bulk orders. Cards are available in packs up to 100 for standard orders. For larger needs, our custom print option starts at 1,000 cards, takes approximately 5 days, and can be ordered in any quantity.
